History
The land that is now Ocean County was first discovered in the 1600s by Captain Cornelius Hendrickson. Settlement of the area occurred late in the 17th century. However, Ocean County was not formally established until February of 1850. Although the county was not home to many people at first, its population grew significantly from 1850 to 1950. In the past three decades, unprecedented growth in this area raised the population to 560,000 people.
Things to Do
Ocean County offers many diversions that draw a significant number of tourists each year. This county claims 44 luxurious miles of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean and is home to three major resort areas: Long Beach Island, Seaside Heights Boardwalk and Point Pleasant Beach. Each of these resorts is unique in its own way, boasting aquariums, carousels and much more. In addition, plenty of opportunities are available in these communities for people who wish to surf, fish or participate in other water sports.
For people who enjoy more relaxing activities, Ocean County offers camping, bed and breakfasts, hotels and two oceanfront state parks. Visitors and residents can also take advantage of river cruising, local museums, historical sites, fine restaurants and several nearby theme parks. Popular theme parks in the area include Casino Pier Breakwater Beach, Six Flags Great Adventure and Fantasy Island.
