Located in Central New Jersey, Monmouth County is the fifth most populous county in the state. This county is known for its beach communities, exciting festivals, intriguing historical sites and delightful towns.
History
The land that is now Monmouth County was first spotted by Europeans in 1609, when an English man named Henry Hudson visualized the land from his ship. The land was first settled by a group of Quakers in 1665. These Quaker settlers were eventually joined by a group of Scottish settlers, as well as a group of Dutch settlers in the years that followed.
The county was formally established as a province of East Jersey in 1683. However, the first county government for Monmouth County wasn’t created until 1714.

Monmouth County is often heralded as the “gateway to the Jersey Shore.” The county is home to more than 50 miles of beaches, making it the perfect location for anyone who enjoys a good day by the water. Monmouth County also offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, antiquing, golfing and visiting the theater. For those looking for an active nightlife, you will also find concerts, fine dining, bars, nightclubs and more.
In addition to all of its other attractions, Monmouth County also hosts a number of annual events, including fairs, movies on the beach, jazz festivals, seafood festivals and more.
